My name is Piacere Mario. I was born in northern Italy near Venice(Vicenza Province) in 1944 and baptized on the 8th October. I joined the Society of Saint Francis Xavier for Foreign Missions (Xaverian Missionary Fathers ) and made my First Religious Profession in 1962. I was ordained as priest in 1971 in Scotland (near Glasgow) . Why Scotland? Because at 20 years of age my Superiors sent me there with a few other Professed students since the Congregation was opening there a Theology House . So after one year of language in Glasgow ,I studied theology in the Archdiocesan Seminary for 5 years, and after Ordination I worked in our Junior College there for another 6 years .
私の名前はピアチェレ・マリオです。1944年にイタリア北部のヴェネツィア近郊（ヴィチェンツァ県）で生まれ、10月8日に洗礼を受けました。 聖フランシスコ・ザベリオ海外宣教会（聖ザベリオ宣教会）に入会し、1962年に最初の修道誓願を立てました。1971年にはスコットランド（グラスゴー近郊）で司祭叙階されました。なぜスコットランドだったのか？それは、20歳の時、修道会が現地に神学校を開設することになったため、上長から他の数名の誓願を立てた学生たちと共にそこへ派遣されたからです。グラスゴーで1年間英語を学んだ後、大司教区神学校で5年間神学を学び、叙階後は現地のジュニア・カレッジでさらに6年間勤務しました。
It was my first impact with a foreign culture and it has been challenging . From espresso coffee to tea , from wine to beer and whisky (by the way, I really am enjoying the re-run of Massan on NHK) ,from spaghetti and pizza to minced mutton meat and tatties, and fish and chips. As a young priest , often I celebrated Mass in a prison for youngsters. I enjoyed working with lay people, from whom I had great support for our missionary activities. It was a time when I learnt how Catholics had to strive to live faithfully in a mainly Protestant environment, and I took part in various events of the newly starting ecumenical movement.
私にとって初めての異文化との触れ合いであり、挑戦の連続でした。エスプレッソから紅茶へ、ワインからビールやウイスキーへ（ちなみに、NHKで再放送されている『マッサン』を本当に楽しんでいます）、スパゲッティやピザから、羊肉のミンチ（ひき肉）とジャガイモ、フィッシュ・アンド・チップスへと。若い司祭だったこともあり、私はよく少年刑務所でミサを捧げていました。また、信徒の方々と共に働くことは楽しい経験であり、彼らから私たちの宣教活動に対して多大な支援をいただきました。当時は、プロテスタントが主流の環境の中で、カトリック教徒がどのようにして信仰を貫いて生きるべきかを学んだ時期でもあり、始まったばかりのエキュメニカル運動の様々な行事にも参加しました。
I arrived in Japan in 1979, so I have been living and working here for about 47 years . Why Japan? When I was in the 2nd year of Middle school I witnessed a deeply moving scene : the meeting and farewell between my father and his two younger brothers ,both of them Xaverian Missionary Fathers . One was just back from China where he had been for 15 years, the other one was leaving for Japan . It was then that I felt I wanted to become a missionary . My uncle wrote to me beautiful things about this Country ( tea ceremony, the gardens, the cherry blossoms , calligraphy, kimono, haiku) and so raised my interest for Japan. When asked by my Superiors about my preferences for a Mission land, the obvious answer was JAPAN .
1979年に日本へ渡りました。以来、約47年間ここで生活し働いてきました。なぜ日本だったのでしょうか？中学2年生の時、私は心に深く響く光景を目撃したのです。それは、父と、同じくザベリオ宣教会の神父である二人の叔父との再会と別れの場面でした。一人は15年間滞在していた中国から戻ったばかりで、もう一人はこれから日本へ向かうところでした。その時だったのです。私が宣教師になりたいと強く思うようになったのは。叔父は、日本について（茶道、庭園、花見、書道、着物、俳句など）素晴らしいことを手紙に書いてくれ、それが私の日本への関心を高めてくれました。上長から宣教地の希望を尋ねられたとき、当然の答えは「日本」でした。
Most of my missionary activity (about 35 years) has been in Miyazaki province , Oita diocese. Working as parish priest and /or director of kindergarten , I did my best to talk of Jesus and lead people to Jesus. In the kindergarten I held regular study session on religious subjects for the mothers . In the church I encouraged the communities to organize events to which non-Christians could take part (e.g. concerts , talks, Mass under the daikon radish scaffolding ). In my sixties I joined the local ground-golf club and the go club .
私の宣教活動の大部分（約35年間）は、大分教区の宮崎県で行われてきました。 主任司祭や幼稚園の園長として働きながら、イエスについて語り、人々をイエスへと導くために最善を尽くしました。幼稚園では、母親たちを対象に宗教に関する勉強会を定期的に開催しました。教会では、キリスト教徒でない人たちも参加できる行事を共同体が主催するよう奨励しました（例：コンサート、講演、大根の棚の下でのミサなど）。60代の頃には、地元のグラウンドゴルフクラブと囲碁クラブに入会しました。
In the last 10 years I served as superior of our Xaverian House in Miyazaki, while being parish priest of a church at about 13 miles away. Two years ago, at the age of 80, I asked my Superior to relieve me of the responsibility as parish-priest and assign me as assistant to a younger confrere, and so this April I landed in Kumamoto as auxiliary priest in the parishes of Shimasaki and Kengun (plus Takayubaru). So far I have learned the roads to move from one church to the other. From now on the challenge is to start new relationships in the three churches.
ここ10年間は、宮崎にある聖ザベリオ宣教会修道院の院長を務めつつ、そこから約２０キロ離れた教会の主任司祭も兼任していました。2年前、80歳の時、私は上長に、私から主任司祭の責務を解き、私より若い同僚の下で補佐として配属してほしいと願い出ました。その要請の結果として今年の4月、私は島崎教会および健軍教会（さらに高遊原教会）の助任司祭として熊本に赴任しました。これまでのところ、各教会間を移動する方法を学んでいるところです。これからはそれぞれの共同体の皆さんとの新しい関係を築いていくことが私の課題となります。
